De-Icing Solutions

Here in the Northeast, we are very reliant on chlorides for de-icing our roads, parking lots, and walkways.  These surfaces are constantly under assault from weather, sunlight, ground pressure, and improper use of de-icing chlorides can be the dagger in the heart of asphalt and concrete.  Additionally, over application of de-icing chlorides can damage the green scape, buildings, and pollute our eco-systems.  So what do we do?

As an industry we need to be aware of the damage we can cause, we need to educate ourselves and better understand how to utilize our de-icing chlorides.  In the process of implementing the education into action, we also need to educate our customers about the how and the why of our de-icing chlorides.  Customers are use to having their walks blanketed with granular de-icers that resemble the Bonneville Salt Flats, but that creates a janitorial nightmare and causes a larger slip and fall hazard.  These common practices are still seen all over the country, but they aren't best practices.

Rock Salt
Salt Brine Pre-Treatment

Through education and technology we at Hedge's Landscaping have always utilized a safer rock salt that is treated with distillers' byproducts and have corrosion inhibitors.  These additives make our de-icer of choice safer for all surfaces, while decreasing the amount of chloride applied, working more efficiently to lower temperatures, and decreasing pollution risk.

Our de-icing program also utilizes the use of liquid chlorides, otherwise known as salt brine.  There is a lot of negative connotation around liquid de-icers from contractors to the public, but the simplest reason for this is lack of education.  Liquids work faster, skipping the process of which salt needs to form a brine to melt accumulations.  Liquids work at a lower temperatures, 23.3% solution of salt brine without additives will not freeze until -6* F.   And brines do not track like the granules of rock salt, reducing janitorial costs.  If you are a customer looking to see how we can help reduce chloride damage to your property while keeping it safe contact us!  We have results to help show you the efficacy and the projected savings.
